Native Columbine

A native columbine in Indiana, Aquilegia canadensis, is a prolific bloomer in early spring.

Aquilegia canadensis is easy to grow. Simply collect the seeds after the seed pod has dried to brown and is no longer sticky. The seeds will fall out in your hand when you squeeze the dried pod. Sow the seeds in soil before winter as the seeds need to be stratified for them to germinate. In the spring, you will have new growth! They self propagate in this way also, so be sure to put them somewhere that you won’t mind them spreading.
